HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is moving forward with plans to accelerate the development of a domestic electric vehicle ecosystem, including the construction of a national electric motorcycle manufacturing plant to strengthen the country’s automotive industry.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to build Indonesia’s manufacturing capabilities and enable the country to produce electric vehicles independently.
“This proves that if we have the determination and the will, Indonesia is capable of achieving it,” Prasetyo said, Holopis.com reported, Wednesday (22/7).
Speaking at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, Prasetyo said the development of electric vehicles is expected to support not only the automotive sector but also Indonesia’s long-term energy transition.
He said wider adoption of electric vehicles would help reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuel-based transportation while contributing to national economic growth.
“This achievement is not only about the automotive industry. It will also reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help decrease our dependence on conventional fuel,” he said.
Prasetyo also called on all stakeholders to support the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry, acknowledging that remaining challenges should be addressed collectively as the project moves forward.
“There may still be shortcomings, but we should work together to improve them,” he added.
Prabowo Targets Homegrown Electric Motorcycle
Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto expressed confidence that Indonesia would soon introduce a locally developed electric motorcycle, describing it as a key milestone in building a competitive domestic automotive industry.
Speaking during a national harvest event at Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base in Malang Regency, East Java, on Friday, Prabowo said the government is committed to encouraging the development of vehicles designed and manufactured by Indonesian talent.
“We will have motorcycles made by Indonesian talent, and we will have cars made by Indonesian talent,” the president said.
The government expects the expansion of the domestic electric vehicle industry to strengthen Indonesia’s manufacturing sector, drive technological innovation, create new jobs, and accelerate the country’s transition toward cleaner energy.
