HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka said technological innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), should go hand in hand with cultural preservation to strengthen the nation’s identity.
“Technology and culture must go hand in hand. We cannot stop technological disruption, but we must ensure that technological progress advances alongside our cultural values,” Gibran said, Holopis.com reported, Thursday (16/7).
Gibran made the remarks during a meeting with leaders of Bela Budaya Nusantara, a cultural preservation organization, at Randu Mas Arts and Cultural Park in East Lampung on Wednesday.
He said the rapid growth of digital technology and AI presents opportunities to introduce Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage to a wider audience while reinforcing national identity. The vice president emphasized that technological change is inevitable and should be embraced rather than resisted.
His comments came after Bela Budaya Nusantara Chairman Mulyono expressed concern that younger generations could become increasingly disconnected from Indonesia’s traditions if cultural preservation efforts fail to keep pace with technological development.
“We are concerned that if we fail to protect our culture, future generations may become skilled in technology but lose touch with our traditions and cultural values,” Mulyono said.
Responding to those concerns, Gibran said the government remains committed to ensuring that digital transformation does not erode Indonesia’s cultural identity.
He argued that social media, AI, and other digital platforms can instead become powerful tools for promoting Indonesian culture internationally.
“With technological advances, especially social media, we actually have greater opportunities to introduce our culture to the world,” Gibran said.
He added that encouraging young people to engage with Indonesia’s cultural heritage through digital platforms could help strengthen national pride while preserving traditions for future generations.
