HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – Prominent Indonesian lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea has officially joined the legal team of former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah, who is under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering.
“I officially received the power of attorney this morning,” Hotman told reporters in Jakarta, Holopis.com reported, Friday (17/7).
Hotman confirmed that he received the authorization letter from Febrie on Friday before accompanying his client to his first questioning as a suspect at the Attorney General’s Office in Jakarta.
The high-profile lawyer arrived at the Special Crimes Directorate building at around 9:30 a.m. local time, accompanied by fellow attorney Indra Haposan Sihombing.
Before entering the building, Hotman said he had been appointed to represent Febrie throughout the legal proceedings. His appointment marks the latest development in a corruption case involving the former senior prosecutor, which has drawn widespread public attention.
Earlier, Indonesia’s National Police named Febrie Adriansyah and attorney Don Ritto as suspects in an investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering. The case later entered a new phase after the National Police transferred three major investigations to the Attorney General’s Office.
The transferred cases involve alleged corruption in the coal sector, corruption related to state-owned insurers PT ASABRI and PT Jiwasraya between 2020 and 2025, and an alleged money laundering scheme linked to the settlement of debts between PT CBS and PT KNI.
Following the transfer, the Attorney General’s Office launched formal investigations and established a special task force of nine prosecutors to handle the cases. Authorities have also opened three separate investigations involving Febrie, covering alleged corruption related to PT Krakatau Steel, a coal-fired power plant project, and PT ASABRI.
The investigations are being coordinated with National Police investigators, while Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is supervising the legal process.
Hotman’s involvement is expected to draw additional public attention to the case. The veteran lawyer, who is known for representing clients in several of Indonesia’s most prominent legal cases, is expected to defend Febrie throughout the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings. As of Friday afternoon, Febrie’s questioning at the Attorney General’s Office was still ongoing.
Investigators said they are continuing to examine the suspects’ alleged roles and gather evidence as part of the corruption and money laundering investigation.
