HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s House of Representatives plans to consult political parties that are not represented in parliament as part of efforts to revise the country’s election law ahead of future national polls.
“The recess period will be treated as a series of specific working visits. During that time, we will begin meeting with the parties,” Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said, Holopis.com reported, Tuesday (7/7).
Dasco said the consultations will take place after lawmakers begin their parliamentary recess next week. The meetings will be conducted as official working visits to political parties that do not hold seats in the House of Representatives.
He did not specify which parties would be visited or provide further details about the agenda.
The initiative follows an earlier proposal by Aria Bima, deputy chairman of the House’s Commission II, which oversees home affairs and elections. He said lawmakers wanted to hear directly from non-parliamentary parties before finalizing revisions to Law No. 7 of 2017 on General Elections.
According to Aria, the consultations will be led by Dasco and are expected to focus on several key electoral issues.
Among the topics to be discussed are the parliamentary threshold, which determines the minimum share of votes a political party must secure to win seats in parliament, the presidential nomination threshold, electoral district boundaries, and the allocation of parliamentary seats across constituencies.
Aria said the proposed amendments will also address Constitutional Court rulings related to elections, strengthen the political neutrality of state officials during election periods, and improve oversight of Indonesia’s electoral process.
Lawmakers expect input from both parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties to help shape the revised election bill before deliberations move to the next stage.
