HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck waters northwest of the Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi on Monday afternoon, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
As reported by Holopis.com, the earthquake occurred at 3:41 p.m. WIB (0841 GMT) with its epicenter located about 181 kilometers northwest of Tahuna, the capital of the Sangihe Islands Regency.
“The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers”, BMKG said, Holopis.com reported, Monday (6/7).
The agency confirmed that the earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, and BMKG had not received any reports of shaking intensity from nearby communities at the time of publication.
Authorities advised residents to remain calm while staying alert for possible aftershocks.
