HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto has called on Indonesians to begin making a mass transition from gasoline-powered motorcycles to electric vehicles as the government prepares incentives to make electric motorcycles more affordable.
Prabowo made the statement during the launch of the National Electric Motorcycle (Molinas) at the ALVA production facility operated by PT Ilectra Motor Group in the Delta Mas Industrial Estate, Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java, on Thursday (Aug. 13, 2026).
The President initially instructed Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa to work on ways to make electric motorcycles easier for the public to purchase, including reducing loan interest rates and potentially eliminating down payments.
“Danantara, support this in whatever way you can. We discussed this earlier. The Finance Minister may not be too happy, but in the end, you will like it. We will lower installment interest rates for the people, and we will also try to make it possible without a down payment,” Prabowo said, Holopis.com reported, Thursday (13/8).
The government is also preparing other incentives to encourage wider adoption of electric motorcycles.
Prabowo said the transition would eventually become increasingly important as countries around the world move toward lower-carbon transportation and introduce carbon-related policies.
Prabowo Highlights Lower Operating Costs
Prabowo said calculations discussed within the government indicated that switching from gasoline motorcycles to electric motorcycles could significantly reduce people’s daily transportation expenses.
“We calculated that using an electric motorcycle compared with a gasoline motorcycle can save at least 50 percent. Your daily transportation expenses can be reduced by at least 50 percent, and eventually it could reach 70 percent,” he said.
He also warned that gasoline-powered motorcycles could face increasingly restrictive policies in major cities as governments around the world pursue emissions-reduction measures.
“This has become a global necessity. There is carbon tax, and in major cities such as Beijing, gasoline motorcycles cannot enter. So this is just a warning for those who are still determined to stick with gasoline motorcycles,” Prabowo said.
He then made a pointed remark to people who continue using gasoline motorcycles.
“So if later there are still people using gasoline motorcycles, then deal with it yourselves,” he said.
