HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – Indonesia and Russia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating cross-border drug trafficking over the 2026–2027 period, with both countries focusing on intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination, and tighter surveillance in high-risk areas, including Bali.

“The Indonesia-Russia partnership is expected to help disrupt drug supply chains, limit the movement of international trafficking networks, and strengthen public protection against narcotics, particularly in major tourist destinations such as Bali,” National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chief Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto said, Holopis.com reported, Monday (6/7).

The agreement includes real-time intelligence sharing to monitor international drug trafficking networks and closer coordination between law enforcement agencies and immigration authorities to prevent traffickers from crossing borders.

The partnership was also prompted by the discovery of Indonesia’s first clandestine mephedrone laboratory allegedly involving Russian nationals, prompting both governments to strengthen joint enforcement efforts.

Suyudi said Indonesia would take firm action against foreign nationals found to be involved in drug trafficking, including criminal prosecution and deportation in accordance with Indonesian law. Beyond law enforcement, the two countries also agreed to expand cooperation in combating cybercrime linked to narcotics trafficking.

The collaboration includes strengthening digital forensic capabilities, cyber investigations, and tracking cryptocurrency transactions that are often used to conceal proceeds from drug-related crimes. Indonesia and Russia will also increase information sharing on new psychoactive substances (NPS), including emerging smuggling methods involving electronic cigarettes.

Suyudi emphasized that combating narcotics requires more than law enforcement alone, adding that public education and prevention programs would continue to play an important role in reducing drug abuse.

The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency and Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow on June 22-23, 2026.

During the visit, the Indonesian delegation met with Russian Deputy Interior Minister Igor Zubov and Ivan Valentinovich Gorbunov, head of the Main Directorate for Drug Control at Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The delegation also visited the ministry’s Safe City System and forensic laboratories to study surveillance technologies and forensic tools used in drug investigations.
